About Steve Gilroy
Steve Gilroy first traveled to Alaska in 1985. After working near Denali National Park for the summer, he hitch hiked from Fairbanks to Boston to complete his second college degree. Then in the spring of 1986, Steve began his career as a professional photographer by establishing the first commercial photography service available for people river rafting at the entrance to Denali National Park.
In 1988 he began his freelance editorial career by targeting international adventure travel and world environmental issues. By 1991 he had completed seven major trips to Russia, Africa and South America, each lasting two to three months in length. The result was considerable photo credits and feature articles in numerous magazines, books and company brochures and corporate advertisements.
In 1991, Steve founded Denali Images, a self-publishing company which showcased his work in a complete line of Alaskan calendars, posters, fine art note cards and his first book, Kenai Fjords; Alaska’s Jewel In The Rough. By 1994 these materials were distributed in more than 200 retail locations including Costco, REI and literally dozens of retail gift shops located across Alaska.
To facilitate his desire to photograph Alaska’s most spectacular wildlife and scenery, Steve founded Alaska Photo Tours in 1993. Since that time his company has hosted more than 100 groups on custom trips to Alaska’s hotspots as international photo safaris to Africa and Patagonia.
Presently Steve is staying close to home in Wasilla, Alaska where he operates his fine art gallery, digital lab and framing studio. He also has a stunning Photo Musical choreography; Alaska The Greatland, which shows nightly to tourists staying at a major lodge in the area. He lives with his wife Elizabeth and is busy raising three daughters; Grace, Gabriella and Abigail. For Additional Information, please see his about me page.
